Personal Property, Lending, Agriculture and Real Estate

Our People - Images

Layh & Associates practices commercial law with a focus on debtor-creditor and personal property security law. We provide general legal counsel to credit unions, co-ops, agricultural input suppliers and other lending institutions in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. We also provide consultation services and act as agents for other law firms regarding complex debtor-creditor and personal property security issues, including litigation of such matters.

Donald H. Layh has garnered a reputation as one of the prairies' most dynamic legal educators, offering tailor-made legal education to credit unions, agricultural implement dealers and co-ops. For over 20 years, Don has specialized in personal property security law with a particular focus on Credit Unions in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He has taught at the Saskatchewan Bar Admission Course for several years, has lectured in all western Canadian provinces and New Zealand on personal property security law and has been a Professor at the College of Law in Saskatoon. Layh & Associates continues to offer a number of legal courses throughout the Canadian prairies.

Don is joined by two young, talented lawyers: Shawn Patenaude and Clayton Bangsund, both admitted to the Manitoba Bar, and an articling student, Devin Dubois. All call the rural prairies “home” and bring their practical problem solving sense to legal issues.

Layh & Associates will soon have offices in two towns adjoining the border on the Yellowhead Highway, one in Russell, Manitoba (in the historic A. G. Smellie Block) and the other in Langenburg, Saskatchewan (in the unique John Deere Building).

The support staff at Layh & Associates is skilled, with numerous years of experience gained in accounting firms, chartered banks and law firms. Debbie Basken, Shannon Van Caeseele, Gwen Poier, Michele Yeske and Barbie Schmidt are vital in providing quality legal services.

We are committed to offering practical advice in plain language. We strive to offer advice in a timely manner, tempered to meet the individual needs of the client. We think of our office as an adjunct to our clients’ businesses, with a mandate to quickly and effectively resolve issues that might arise.
